Dharamshala

Dharamshala The hillside town of Dharamshala, stretches along a spur of the Dhauladhar mountain range amidst magnificent deodar, conifer and pine forests, tea gardens and mist-soaked hills. Since 1960, when it became the temporary headquarters of the Dalai Lama, it has been attracting seekers of spiritual enlightenment from all over the world.
The headquarters of the Kangra district, Dharamshala is divided into two distinct parts - Lower Dharamshala, and Upper Dharamshala with places like Mcleod Ganj and Forsyth Ganj, which are names that bear witness to the history of the area. The place is an excellent base for walks and treks into the Dhauladhar range.

Bhagsunag
Located 02 km from Mcleodganj, the ancient shrine of Bhagsunag, dedicated to Lord Shiva, attracts visitors. A fresh water spring is the added attraction.

Chinmaya Tapovana
One of the most frequented pilgrimage destinations in Dharamshala, The ashram complex set up by Swami Chinmayananda.

Dal Lake
The place is famous for a pretty scenic lake surrounded by forests of pine trees

Dharamkot
The picnic spot offers a panoramic view of the Kangra valley.

Kangra Art Museum
Situated in Kotwali Bazaar, this is a treasure trove of the Kangra Valley’s arts and crafts. It includes a gallery of Kangra’s famous miniature paintings.

Kunal Pathri
A small rock-cut temple dedicated to a local goddess is visited by people.

Namgyaima Stupa
The stupa is a memorial to the Tibetans who died fighting in their homeland.

McLeod Ganj
Famous Tibetan institutions have lent importance to McLeod Ganj. A Buddha temple is situated opposite the present abode of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama and around it are situated a Tibetan monastery and nunnery. The Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) preserves a number of musical, dance and theatrical traditions of Tibet.

The Norbulingka Institute
It is situated in the valley below Dharamsala. Build according to traditional Tibetan style, the institute promotes the traditional arts and literary studies of Tibet. Landmarks include the Seat of Happiness Temple and the Losel Dance Museum.

St. John’s Church
Lying in the forest between McLeod Ganj and Forsyth Ganj, the place has a monument dedicated to Lord Elgin, one of the Viceroys of India.

War Memorial
The memorial commemorates the memory of those who fought valiantly the defence of the motherland.

Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute
This Institute has in its premises a hospital where ill and destitute people are treated free of charge, an out-patient clinic, a Medical and Astrological College, a Research Department carrying out modern clinical research on Tibetan traditional methods of cure, an Astronomical and Astrology Department, a pharmacy where more than 200 different medicines are made in the traditional way with herbs, gems, metals and minerals as well as a museum displaying various raw drugs, surgical instruments, medical and astrological charts.

Tsuglakhang
It is the nerve center of the town, the Dalai Lama's residence. The temple is said to be a replica of the original Tsuglakhang, the main temple in Lhasa

Namgyal Monastery
