Jim Corbett National Park

One of India’s best known and oldest wildlife sanctuaries, the Corbett National Park lies along the Ramganga river at the foot of the Kumaon hills. It is named after Jim Corbett, the famous naturalist and the legendary hunter of the man-eaters of Kumaon. The main areas for tourists are the Dhikala Tourism Zone (entry through Dhangarhi Gate) and the Bijrani Tourism Zone (entry through the Amdanda Gate).

Sights to See

Jim Corbett National Park, the oldest national park in India, acts as a protected area for the critically endangered Bengal tiger of India, and is a Project Tiger park. It was established in 1936 as Hailey National Park. Wildlife in the Park : Tiger, panther, wild boar, sloth bear, Indian elephant, hyena, large Indian antelope, blue bull, four-horned antelope, swamp, spotted, hog & barking deer, goral, Nemorhaedus, common monkey, rhesus monkey, porcupine, otter, Indian ratel, mongoose.

Fishing Sites:
Mahseer and trout are found in the waters of this area. Fishing can only be done in areas outside the National Park and Sonanadi Sanctuary, between 1 October and 30 June. Fishing Permits can be obtained from the Reception at Ramnagar at Rs. 150per rod per day.

Interesting Spots:
Dhikala, Sarpduli, Paterpani, Gairal, High Bank are important pockets for wildlife viewing. Kalagarh is scenic spot. The museum at Dhangarhi Gate is open throughout the year.

Park Visits:
Day visits to Dhikala Tourism Zone are not permitted except in conducted trips organised by Corbett Tiger Reserve, starting from Ramnagar. Other tourists, with private or hired vehicles, are permitted to enter the Dhikala zone, only for overnight stay, provided they hold confirmed reservations in the Forest Department accommodation and are carrying the reservation slip issued at Ramnagar. Day visits by private vehicles are allowed in the Bijrani Tourism Zone (private buses not allowed).
