Jodhpur

Located almost on the edge of the Thar Desert, the city of Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs and was the capital of the State of Marwar.

Jodhpur is also known as the Sun City because the sun shines brightly here every day of the year, and as Blue City since most houses in the old part of he city are painted blue.
The forts and palaces, temples and havelis, culture and tradition, spices and fabrics, colour and texture, a booming handicrafts industry, all add up to make this historic city worth a visit.

Sights to See

Mehrangarh Fort
Crowning a perpendicular cliff, the fort was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 AD, around which the city grew. Within it, the fort contains the Maharaja's palace, several temples and an extensive garden. Highlights include: Moti Mahal (Pearl Hall); Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Hall), Phool Mahal (Flower Hall), Zenana Deodi where the king’s wives spent their time; Chamunda Mataji Temple; and a museum. Timings: 9 am to 5 pm; Flood Lighting: 8 to 10 pm on Saturdays & Sundays; Entry Fee: Rs. 30for Indians & Rs. 300 (include audio guide) for foreigners; Camera Fee: Rs. 75 for still camera & Rs. 200 for video camera; Elevator Fee: Rs. 20 per person. Bhawan Palace
The Maharaja of Jodhpur lives in this palace till today. A portion of the palace has been converted into a hotel, while the other part is a museum, open to visitors. Timings: 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. Entry Fee: Rs. 15 for Indians & Rs. 50 for foreigners.

Jaswant Thada
Built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh ll in 1899, the imposing white marble memorial marks the site of a royal crematorium. Entry fee: Rs. 50 for foreigner & Rs. 20 for Indians

Shopping
Giridkot and Sardar Market: Throbbing with activity, the colourful bazaar near the clock tower has narrow lanes dotted with tiny shops selling exquisite Rajasthani textiles, handicrafts, clay figurines of camels and elephants, marble curios with inlay work and exquisite Rajasthani silver jewellery.
